You Need Me: July 2nd, 2009

What's Going On/Let's Get It On

When I first downloaded these albums, they came as one. I must confess that I only recently realized they weren't a joint album but in fact two very separate albums. This obviously distinctly coloured my impression of them, and thus this article is about both of them at once.

"What's Going On" and "Let's Get It On" are perhaps the two most prevalent thoughts of youth. As child, I, like probably many others, wasn't very concerned with either, but once my balls dropped and hair sprouted out from strange places on my body, each of them became all consuming in their own various ways.

Interestingly, it's perhaps these areas of the mind that divide and define us we grow up. How, where, and when you answer the question "What's going on" is essentially what maturation to some degree. If you are like Marvin, it's the state of social welfare, the ecology and our relationship with god. That also sounds like typical answers of those who have smoked weed and possess a tendency for harshing buzzes. I digress.

Both are essentially insatiable; new things are always happening, and lust renews itself very regularly for those of us lucky enough to have a libido. If you believe freud et al., sexuality is the most psychologically revealing area of behaviour. It's also typically the most physically revealing, unless you are of the Jewish Orthodox faith.

I've probably already made the point that I enjoy the illusion of narratives in my albums. "What's Going On" especially possesses few breaks in between the tracks, songs blending into one another; "Let's Get It On" breaks up the tracks more but still has a unifying musical aesthetic throughout.

If you are like me, these are still the most important issues in day-to-day life. If you wish to figure out what's going on or to find to some to get it on with, I suggest you reguarly listen to these records.

Try Let's Get It On
Try What's Going On
